It’s Up to Us
We’ve got a lot of problems in this world, and most people
are banking on the wrong people to put things right. The President of the
United States can’t stop global warming. Environmental activists aren’t going
to make nuclear power plants safe from earthquakes. Our congressmen aren’t
going to stamp out terrorism.
My point is that it’s going to take a lot of engineering to
keep the world a safe and livable place. It would help if that engineering were
done in an efficient, productive manner. But there are politicians involved. The
people who are good at getting elected are trained as lawyers when what is
needed is engineers. We could rant and rave and blog about the terrible mess
we’re in, or we can do what engineers do best, slice the problems into
digestible chunks and start improving. I’m sure a lot of you out there are
already doing just that. We’d all like to hear about your efforts and any ideas
you have to speed up this process. The planet needs engineers, so are you up
for the challenge?
